Explore the property…

The wrap-around deck is ideal for relaxing and viewing sunsets and incredible night skies as well as listening to the roar of the ocean. Because Flying Bridge is at the highest point on Horns Hill and the third highest point on the island, you can catch a few extra precious seconds of those awe-inspiring Monhegan sunsets!

In addition to late sunsets, it is a great place to watch the spring and fall bird migrations.

The property has some other great perks. There is a large, private yard with a small vegetable garden, concord grape vines, blueberry bushes, and an apple tree. Check daily throughout the summer months to find fresh blueberries and tart apples ready for picking, then try out these recipe ideas.

Charlie was an avid gardener and baker, as well as a beekeeper. He thoughtfully cultivated all the resources the property had to offer and even learned to make honey wine and brew beer.

Psst…Although there are no longer any brewing activities on the property, if you are interested in enjoying a cold beer, there’s a private trail just past the red shed (a.k.a., the engine room) that leads to the Monhegan Brewing Company.

Start your journey…

Explore the island...

Ten miles off of mid-coast Maine, Monhegan has a history of active lobstering and a varied landscape that has attracted many plein air artists from the 19th century onward, including Jamie Wyeth and Rockwell Kent who both lived on the island.

Two-thirds of the island is preserved land with 17 miles of hiking trails (requiring good hiking shoes) out to the highest headlands on the eastern seaboard. To find your way, pick up a trail map at various places throughout your journey to and on the island. Please be mindful that Monhegan Associates has a “Leave no Trace” policy and discourages any alteration or additions to its wildlands.

This is a “walking island” so there are only a few dirt roads in the village with limited pickup trucks reserved for use by island businesses and fishermen.

Spring and fall bird migrations offer a great opportunity for some serious bird-watching experiences. There are various musical and literary events throughout the summer, and visitors will also find many art studios and a fantastic historical art museum and lighthouse to explore.

The village offers a few inns, restaurants, cafes, gift shops, as well as a library, art gallery, and a brewery! Grab lunch at the Fish House with fresh lobsters and foodie options, or the brewery with fantastic fried oysters or scallops and hand-crafted beers and sodas. Make a dinner reservation at the Island Inn for a variety of chef-prepared local dishes.

And that’s just a few highlights!
